Dr. Showkat Ali taught as professor of international business and finance in the school of business and finance at the Long Island University in New York, since 1999. He taught International Economics, international trade and finance at the Fordham University in 1990s. He also taught at the CUNY. He was an advisor of the Brooklyn International Trade and Export organization. He was the consultant advisor of Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed, former Permanent Representative (PR) of Bangladesh at the United Nations on international trade, finance, and business-related issues. Dr. Showkat is a direct student of Noble laureate the founder of Grameen Bank, Dr. Muhammad Yunus at the University of Chittagong. He was  voted as the Champion debater at the Department of Economics in 1976. In 1971 he participated at the war of Independence of Bangladesh. During the war he heroically captured a Pakistani army officer and snatched his armament, an automatic Chinese weapon at his own village Kayer Para in the district of Jessore.

After graduation from the University of Chittagong with Honors in Economics, he joined with Housing environmental research cell (HERC) under Dr. Mubashar Ali at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1977.  In 1977 he joined the prominent national “Daily Desh” at the Editorial Department under veteran Journalist Janab Sana Ullah Noori in Dhaka. He published over 16 hundred editorials and post editorials columns on various subjects on global economic development including President Zia’s  economic planning for rural Bangladesh at the editorial pages in different national dailies.  In 1970s he was the University reporter for the Daily Janapad , Dhaka (Editor, Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury) in Dhaka and Daily Janabarta (Editor, Poet Ahmed Ali Shahitya Ratna) in Khulna.

  In 1981 he came to Columbia University in New York to do his Diploma in Population and economic development in Developing Nations. Dr. Ali received his M.S in Economics and Business management from the CUNY and he received his M. Sc, in Financial Engineering from the New York University (NYU) in 2003. Dr. Ali received his Ph. D in International Economics and Finance from the Fordham University in New York in 1996.

Dr. Ali authored several books and published articles both in English and his native language Bangla in national and international journals. He authored “Capital flows, Saving and Investment in the World Economy” (published on 250 -year-life papers from London, New York and Tokyo in 1997).

His second seminal book, “The Foundations of Capital and Labor mobility in Global economy’ will be published in 2023.  He was frequently interviewed on global economics and political issues on national and international Tv and Radios.

 Prominent among, Voice of America (VOA, State department), BBC, BTV, ATN Bangla, NTV, 21 TV, Bangla Vision, Millennium TV USA, Jamuna TV, Diganto TV, Time TV and so on. He is the President  of Bangladesh Journalists and Writers Association of North America (BJWA, Rgd.in New York), He is the founder Chairman of “Poet Ahmed Ali Sahitya Ratna Foundation” in New York and Bangladesh. He is involved in social, educational, political and economic development in Bangladeshi community in the United States. Dr. Showkat is married, His wife Ruhina Tasmin Shelley (M.sc) is an Assistant Director of a government preparatory school in New York. They have three children and reside in Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York.
